V3 and Whatnot

By Kris, December 13, 2009 12:54 pm

Sorry for not posting in such a long time. Not all that much has happened lately. But I figure I should post in order to procrastinate from this dreaded English essay I have to write.

I’m going to start off my announcing that I am working on a new look for the site. I’ve already grown bored with this one, and I want a theme that can be seen (the way it’s supposed to be) in all browsers, and not just Firefox. I took a screenshot of how it’s coming along so far, and here it is (click to enlarge):

Upcoming Theme?

I am using Dreamweaver CS3 to create this website (I’m using tables this time to help things stay organized and in place). The design (especially the header) is somewhat inspired by Facebook’s header, but because Dreamweaver has some problems with row-height in a table, right now the header, footer, and post title row all look way taller than they are supposed to be.

Next up is the past week. This last school week, we had a normal day Monday, and a normal Tuesday. But the rest of the week was filled with a huge snow blizzard, closing school for the rest of the week. So we had a 5 day weekend, and today is the last day of that, which disappoints me.

My dad’s birthday is this Thursday, and I know what he’s getting as a gift, and I guarantee he’s going to love it!

Right now I’m trying to sell my snowboard and boots on Craigslist for money so I can finish buying Christmas gifts for people, but nobody’s showing any interesting at all. So I’m probably just going to sell it cheap to my parents or something so I can get the money quickly. Money isn’t really something I’m too interesting in right now, as long as I can get enough to buy the rest of the presents I plan on buying.

During the first 3 days of our 5 day weekend, I begun them by playing Fallout 3 for around 7 hours each day. I am kind of hooked to that game right now, so I also had it installed to my computer, and I’ve been playing it when I’m bored, too.

That’s really it. I told you there’s not much going on right now…

The Princess and the Frog

By Kris, December 13, 2009 12:36 pm

Similar to when I saw Fantastic Mr. Fox, I’m going to post a little review of a movie I recently saw in theaters before I make the main post for today (I apologize for not posting much lately, I haven’t had anything that interesting happen lately). So here’s a review of The Princess and the Frog.

I went and saw this movie with my girlfriend and her little brother, and while I was a little skeptical at first (because it’s a Disney movie), it didn’t take long for it to entertain me. The movie takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana around the…1920’s I believe. Basically it’s about a young black girl who lives in a ghetto with her mom (her dad dies during the war). She tries to take after her dad, and work as hard as she can in order to buy and open a brand new restaurant she’s been dreaming of since she was a child. So she grows up working her whole life non-stop, basically killing herself to accomplish her dream. Eventually a prince comes to town from some far off land, he’s searching for a lady to marry. While he gets to know the town by playing jazz music and dancing with women, he is suddenly introduced to a Voodoo guy (he is called Shadow Man). The Voodoo guy takes him and his servant to his Voodoo shop and sets his personal plan in motion. (He’s going to take over the city of New Orleans). He starts it by changing the prince into a frog, and his servant is transformed into the prince. They go to a ball, the main character is catering it, her food gets destroyed, she gets upset and her friend (very rich friend) takes her to her house to change into better clothes. Then the main character hangs over a balcony and meets the prince (in frog form, obviously). And that’s as far as I’ll go into details. I don’t want to spoil the whole movie.

Anyway, I thought it was really quite good, especially the parts that had the Shadow Man, with all of his Voodoo and crazy colors whipping around the screen. I don’t know whether or not I’d recommend it to anybody, but it was fun to watch, anyway.

Cut Short

Before I go about the rest of the post, I got my final grades for the first trimester, including Physics, this time. The grades dropped a bit because of exams. I added the image to the bottom of the previous post.

Now on to the real reason I’m posting tonight instead of later. Today in my Honors English 10 class, we presented a Book Talk  about a novel we were to read over the summer (and first trimester). People seem to be doing pretty well, and I managed to avoid presenting in front of the class for the past 2 days. But today, not only did I present, but I was first! Which is exactly what I didn’t want.

I absolutely hate presenting in front of groups of people. When I heard we’d be doing it a lot in this class, I almost dropped it because I am no good in front of people. But then I stopped myself, because I’m just hoping all of the presenting we’re going to do will help me with my nerves.

imageBefore I go about explaining the presentation, the book I read was called A Separate Peace, and was written by John Knowles (not that anybody reading this really cares, ha-ha). Perhaps I should post my notes for this Book Talk, because there’s 6 pages of it in Microsoft Word. The notes were hand-typed by me, single spaced, size 12 Calibri with default margins.

Anyway, I get up in front of the class to present my Book Talk. I haven’t started yet and already my heart is pounding and my palms start to sweat. I wouldn’t be surprised if my face also got really red right off the bat, if not, it happened eventually. I begin my Book Talk, speaking slowly and loud so people can understand what I’m saying, and I’m trying to avoid too many details because I’ve got a 5 minute time limit. I explain the setting, characters, details, etc; when I get to the summary, I for some reason get confused. I had practiced everything up until this point, and I had 3 full pages of information on the book, so I started off just talking about the first things I can remember from the novel. Things start going pretty smoothly, better than if I were to read it from the notes. But I finally get to the climax of the story, when the teacher stops me and says, “I’m sorry, but your 5 minutes are up. Really quickly, though, would you recommend this book?” frazzled, I just said yes. She asks why, and I don’t feel like I have time to read what I have on the notes, so I just make up some random combination of words that presented the book in a positive manner.

I was really quite embarrassed after that, but I am glad to say that I wasn’t the only one that couldn’t finish. Probably about 5-6 other students (good students) also ran over their time limit because they had an excessive amount of information.

Just a few minutes ago, I got on our school’s grade program to see what I got on the Book Talk, and I got a B+. I put way too much effort into the Book Talk to only get a B+. I at least have to see what I got marked down for. If it’s because I didn’t finish, I’m going to complain, naturally. The teacher shouldn’t be able to mark me down because I actually gave effort. Oh well, that’s the post for today.

Some website-related things: As you can see, I’ve added a Blogroll and an Archives page. If you would like to put yourself on the Blogroll, please use the contact section to apply.

Also: http://pf.kr1s.net is an upcoming portfolio for the site. That way I can show off my designs and other artwork without having to link you to another site. As you can tell, I’m just testing it out for now. I have no information on when it will be done.
