The Princess and the Frog

Similar to when I saw Fantastic Mr. Fox, I’m going to post a little review of a movie I recently saw in theaters before I make the main post for today (I apologize for not posting much lately, I haven’t had anything that interesting happen lately). So here’s a review of The Princess and the Frog.

I went and saw this movie with my girlfriend and her little brother, and while I was a little skeptical at first (because it’s a Disney movie), it didn’t take long for it to entertain me. The movie takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana around the…1920’s I believe. Basically it’s about a young black girl who lives in a ghetto with her mom (her dad dies during the war). She tries to take after her dad, and work as hard as she can in order to buy and open a brand new restaurant she’s been dreaming of since she was a child. So she grows up working her whole life non-stop, basically killing herself to accomplish her dream. Eventually a prince comes to town from some far off land, he’s searching for a lady to marry. While he gets to know the town by playing jazz music and dancing with women, he is suddenly introduced to a Voodoo guy (he is called Shadow Man). The Voodoo guy takes him and his servant to his Voodoo shop and sets his personal plan in motion. (He’s going to take over the city of New Orleans). He starts it by changing the prince into a frog, and his servant is transformed into the prince. They go to a ball, the main character is catering it, her food gets destroyed, she gets upset and her friend (very rich friend) takes her to her house to change into better clothes. Then the main character hangs over a balcony and meets the prince (in frog form, obviously). And that’s as far as I’ll go into details. I don’t want to spoil the whole movie.

Anyway, I thought it was really quite good, especially the parts that had the Shadow Man, with all of his Voodoo and crazy colors whipping around the screen. I don’t know whether or not I’d recommend it to anybody, but it was fun to watch, anyway.
